Close Encounters of the Third Eye

Remember the prospect of seeing things in 3D and how "hi-tech" that once seemed? Captain EO in "3D" at a local Walt Disney cinema, paired with those tacky blue & red glasses - - - - so very retro.
Now 'video to eye' technology isn't so far out of reach, embedded sensors and light emitters are structured within the membrane of the bionic eye, installing and removing will be as easy as popping in a contact lens.
Prototype device contains an electric circuit (pictured on a rabbit)
"There is a large area outside of the transparent part of the eye that we can use for placing instrumentation," Parviz said. Future improvements will add wireless communication to and from the lens. The researchers hope to power the whole system using a combination of radio-frequency power and solar cells placed on the lens, Parviz said. [Babak Parviz is a University of Washington assistant professor of electrical engineering --ed.]
